Para-Nordic Cross Country Skiing
Foothills Para-Nordic is a comprehensive ski program designed to accommodate athletes of all different ages, fitness levels, and abilities. We design individual programs on a case-by-case basis that problem-solve physical literacy, equipment and transportation challenges. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced skier, we have a group of coaches who are experienced in working with athletes of all abilities. We offer classic and skate skill development adapted to each athlete’s needs.
We work closely with Cross Country Alberta and Cross Country Canada to deliver great programs that people of all ages and skill levels can enjoy. Both organizations provide valuable resources that support our programs. Dependent upon the athlete, a progression towards competitive skiing through the Cross Country Alberta format is possible. We aim to ensure everyone has a positive and fun experience – our goal is to develop a lifelong love of cross-country skiing.
In addition to our Monday night Para-Nordic program, we can work with athletes towards participation in other Foothills’ cross country ski programs in age-compatible groups. Please email Foothills Nordic if you are interested.
Any athletes interested in taking a shot at our Para-Biathlon program are welcome to join our Biathlon shooting sessions. We have access to air rifles and an infrared rifle for visually impaired athletes. During this segment we engage in various shooting exercises and games to improve accuracy, speed, and consistency.
Para-Nordic will start in December and run for 9 or 10 sessions through early March.

The Para Nordic program is intended for any athlete who is interested in skiing for fun, fitness and friendship. Includes group ski sessions with individual support to develop and improve on skills. Practices are relaxed and fun but are great workouts and kids should expect to sweat! Winter practices focus on fitness and skill development with a stronger focus on classic technique.
Focus will be on skills for an Active Lifestyle in cross-country skiing. Additional group activities will include Jackrabbit weekend activities (family or group skis), and may include a basic ski tour in non-avalanche terrain. The goal of this group will be to provide opportunities for athletes to stay involved in cross-country skiing, and be ACTIVE-FOR-LIFE. Sessions will include lots of activity and increasing work on ski skills. Our leaders are all NCCP or CANSI-certified and Para Nordic Coaching.

Participants must have appropriate ski equipment (waxable classic skis are also preferred, but not essential,) and winter clothing. Volunteer Requirement/Other Volunteer Opportunities
Foothills Nordic is able to run high quality programs for reasonable cost, due to the volunteer support of our families. ALL Para Nordic parents will be required to signup to assist with minimum two (2) program activities for weekday or weekend events – Weekday Coach Support, Terrain Nights, Family Ski Days, Cookie Race. A full signup list with details on volunteer jobs, will be available and communicated before the first on-snow sessions. Also, 2 dozen cookies for Cookie Race, yum!

We encourage families of all economic levels to participate in this awesome winter sport. If you have constraints for program or equipment costs, Foothills Nordic encourages families to seek support through KIDSPORT, a local program to help lower-income families with sport and activity program costs.
