Alberta Cup 3 & 4

Foothills Nordic Rodeo

January 11 to 12, 2025

Logo for Foothills Nordic Rodeo featuring a skier, mountains, and a tall tower.

This year, we’re hosting Alberta Cup 3 & 4 in Calgary. We’re building on the success of hosting the 2024 Special Olympics and the youth Cookie Race distances at Calgary’s Confederation Golf Course at 3204 Collingwood Dr. N.W.. We’ve mapped out some great lap and spectator-friendly courses for our western Canadian athletes.

We’ll be racing in two different areas, with the U10s and U8s charging through obstacles and terrain features, while the rest of the athletes will race on typical (but super crazy fast!) classic sprint and skate distance courses.

More details…

  • The cold weather policy for the event will follow the ICR-CCR (Canadian Competition Rules) Precisions 2024 (see page 82), where by if the temperature is below -20° C, measured at the coldest point of the course, a competition will be postponed or cancelled by the Jury. With difficult weather conditions (e.g., strong wind, high air humidity, heavy snowfall, or high temperature) the Jury may, in consultation with the Team Captains of the participating teams and the Chief of Medical and Rescue Services responsible for the competition, postpone or cancel the competition.

For U14 age groups and younger, with air temperatures below -15C (temperature measured at the coldest part of the course and without a wind factor), the Jury must postpone or cancel the competition. In that situation, U14 skiers will not be authorized to race up in the U16 categories.

The schedule may change based on weather conditions. The order of races and age groups is expected to stay the same; however, the scheduled times of each race may also change based on how each race unfolds on the day.

  • There are 225 volunteer shifts that we need to fill for this event to be successful. Most shifts are about four hours, and we can offer flexibility in timing to accommodate you watching your kids race or if you need to race yourself.

We have many early morning shifts for set-up that will free up the day for cheering, spectating or possibly shuttling the other half of your family to a completely different and unrelated activity in Calgary. This race weekend is a local event, so your drive will be the same as your weekday evening kid-shuttle to Confederation Park.

Many shifts are close to the action. For example, course controllers are set up at the crazy corners, while the timers and start controllers are right at the start/finish line! FRONT. ROW. SEATS.

And food. You have to eat! We’ll feed you. So why not eat as a volunteer?

Finally, for you younger or new families new to the race scene, this weekend is a great low stress environment to learn more about the kinds of races all our kids can participate in through the season.

  • Controller Team:  Controllers take position at key points on the course to track skiers’ progress and ensure no one goes missing. This is job requires skis, warm boots, warm clothes, a hardy soul, and a thermos of hot chocolate. Additional Information for Course Controller positions

Race Office Team: Check in volunteers, hand out bibs and transponders before the race, or help load the race office materials back into the trucks after the race.

Course Team: Pre-ski the course on Friday placing flags and signs, or sweep the course behind the racers Saturday afternoon, picking up flags and signs as you go. You must be fit enough to ski the course quickly while carrying equipment in a backpack!

Stadium Team: Help set up tents and fencing on Friday, put the final touches on the stadium Saturday morning, then tear it all down and load it up Saturday afternoon. Stadium marshals guide racers and spectators into their respective areas from the parking lot. Many of these positions are perfect for racers because they happen before or after the race!

Timing Team: Write down finish times as backup for the electronic timing system, collect transponders at the finish line, and hand out candy bags to finishers – they will love you for it!

Refreshments Team: Volunteer at one of the three feed stations out on the course.

Jackrabbit Team: Help run the 5km, 3km, 2km, 1km, and 0.5km races for the kids. These are some of the most fun jobs!

Transportation Team: Help load gear from the storage locker in Calgary onto the trucks (Thursday), pull a trailer to Pocaterra Hut, help unload and set up (Friday), reload at the end of the race and then unload again in Calgary (Saturday evening). Perfect for racers because it doesn’t interfere with the race!
