Information

Alberta Cup 3 (Jan. 20) and 4 (Jan. 21)

As a result of postponing the 2024 Westerns Championship Canada Cup due to forecasted cold temperatures, the Organization Committee (OC) has now committed to hosting Alberta Cup (AB) 3 & 4, on Jan. 20 and 21. Information on race registration and refunds is below.

A few things to know about the new race weekend:

  • The AB Cup 3 & 4 Race Notice is here and was pulled together from the Westerns race notice. We’ve tried hard to make sure it’s 100% accurate in a short time. If you have questions, please e-mail the race secretariat or chief of competition for clarification.
  • The Canmore Nordic Centre is open to the public. We’ll have course signage up on Friday and Saturday night for pre-skiing. We’re not offering official training times, and will not have medics on hand for the pre-ski. Athletes and coaches need to manage the risks accordingly. Headlamps and lights are encouraged.
  • The Friday Night Lights ski races are not part of the event, but we encourage skiers and parents and anyone else to sign up on Zone 4 and join in the fun. The event organizer (Mark Toth) has made sure there are no scheduling conflicts. He’s got significant coaching experience and set the event up to support race prep. It’s a low-cost ($2 per skier) and fun Friday evening in the mountains!
  • Updates for race weekend first go to the AB Cup Coaches What’s App group. We encourage coaches and athlete supporters to jump on for updates. See race notice (pg 7) for QR code.
  • WE STILL NEED VOLUNTEERS. With the last minute change, we have lost some volunteers, but hope to gain others. Please see if there is a role for you! Start and Timing are most at risk right now.

Registration (AB Cup 3 & 4) and Refunds (2024 Westerns)

First and foremost, it’s going to be an epic weekend of racing and fun, so we encourage everyone from everywhere to join in! And in case you were wondering, the forecast is hovering just below 0.

REGISTRATION IS CLOSED. Here is the Zone4 confirmation list.

Here are the options for Registration and Refunds:

Option 1: You did not register for Westerns and are now registering for AB Cup 3 & 4

  • If you are registering for the first time, you would have registered for the races you are participating in, just as you would for any other AB Cup race weekend.
  • Registration closes Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 11:59 p.m. MST.

Option 2: You did register for Westerns and are still racing in the AB Cup 3 & 4

  • Do nothing. Your registration will carry over to AB Cup 3 & 4 races.

Option 3: You did register for Westerns and are not attending AB Cup 3 & 4, or you are only attending one of the two AB Cup days:

  • Email [email protected] with the following information:
  • Subject line: 2024 Westerns refund request
  • In the email body, be clear on what you need refunded. Please confirm the age group, race and day of race, and athlete’s name. If you purchased a trail pass or passes, please confirm the number of passes you purchased.  As well as if you purchased a day license or rented wax rooms/wax tents.

Please note:

  • Refunds for the Friday Westerns races will be automatically processed for everyone who registered.
  • All refunds will be processed after Jan. 22. Please be patient, while the OC works through Zone 4 to make sure each refund is accurately processed. It may take a few weeks.
  • The OC is honouring all refunds, minus the administration fee(s).

Refund Policy: Refunds may be offered if the event or a race day is cancelled for reasons other than cold or adverse weather conditions. No other refunds will be offered.

Weather & Cold weather policy

The Weather forecast for the Canmore Nordic Centre is on the Weather Network. Current weather conditions at the Canmore Nordic Centre are available on their Weather Information Network.

The cold weather policy for the event will follow the ICR-CCR (Canadian Competition Rules) Precisions 2024 (see page 82), where by if the temperature is below -20° C, measured at the coldest point of the course, a competition will be postponed or cancelled by the Jury. With difficult weather conditions (e.g., strong wind, high air humidity, heavy snowfall, or high temperature) the Jury may, in consultation with the Team Captains of the participating teams and the Chief of Medical and Rescue Services responsible for the competition, postpone or cancel the competition.

For U14 age groups and younger, with air temperatures below -15C (temperature measured at the coldest part of the course and without a wind factor), the Jury must postpone or cancel the competition. In that situation, U14 skiers will not be authorized to race up in the U16 categories.
