It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Eric Luoma, a founding member of Foothills Nordic Ski Club, passed away on January 16, 2018, at the age of 88.
Eric lived a full life as a family man, businessman and sportsman. His passion for cross country skiing led him to win a few national titles and to being selected to represent Canada in cross-country skiing at the 1964 Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. 1964 was also the year that the Foothills Nordic Ski Club was incorporated as a society. Thanks to Eric’s involvement as a founding member, the Club is still thriving more than 50 years later. Eric made other significant contributions to our ski community including building the first ski jump at Paskapoo (now Canada Olympic Park), and helping construct the first cross country ski trails in the Calgary and Bragg Creek areas.
Foothills Nordic is grateful to benefit from the great legacy of Eric’s vision for Nordic skiing in Alberta. Condolences to the family can be made through www.hffs.com. Memorial donations can be made directly to The Greater Bragg Creek Trails Association in honour of Eric Luoma. Please specify ski-grooming at www.braggcreektrails.org on your donation.
